She called attention to the short amount of time each CV is reviewed by the interviewer, and how to create a CV that accurately reflects the pharmacy student yet stands out from the rest. Dr. Patel also discussed the importance of 'studying' one's own CV prior to an interview, as interviewers may ask about any item on the document. Students had the opportunity to have their current CV reviewed by Dr. Patel. Due to the popularity of the first workshop and high student demand from students on Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations, a second CV Workshop was held. About 35 Rho Chi members were present at this workshop. The presentation focused on preparing for the PGY-1 residency application process, and informed interested students on what to expect using examples from the presenters' experiences. They spoke about clarifying common residency application myths, allowing students to differentiate the facts from the common misconceptions about residency programs. In the second session of the event, they explained practical steps for interested students to plan and prepare for attending the ASHP Midyear 2013. In addition, recent ASHP-accredited residency matching statistics were shown, making students aware of past, current, and projected trends. They also advised students on creating comprehensive, professional curriculum vitae (CV) and stressed the importance of maintaining an updated CV. The end of the presentation was also open to questions from all students. Like last year, this event was very successful and resulted in positive feedback from students who participated. Over 50 pharmacy students attended, including Rho Chi members and nonmembers. CURRICULUM VITAE (CV) WORKSHOP (Photos) 03/25/2013 Priti Patel, PharmD, BCPS led this recurring event. Using her experience in interviewing fellowship candidates, she went over information usually required on pharmacy students' curriculum vitae (CV). Patel. Due to the popularity of the first workshop and high student demand from students on Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience rotations, a second CV Workshop was held on April 30, 2013. About 45 Rho Chi members were present at this workshop. PHARMACY CAREER DAY 03/21/2013 Pharmacy Career Day is a traditional event hosted by the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied health professions. It is considered a 'must go' for all pharmacy students, as it serves as an excellent opportunity to meet with various pharmacy employers. There were representatives from the pharmaceutical industry, nuclear pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, and community pharmacies. The Beta Delta chapter hosted a table at the event to promote the organization. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet with enthusiastic younger classmen, as well as to introduce them to the Rho Chi honor society and the values we stand for. We displayed flyers for upcoming events to all interested students. The event was a huge stride forward in creating the awareness about the society. Attendance was open to all pharmacy students, faculty, and employers. TRAINING SESSION ON ORGAN DONATION COUNSELING (Photos) 03/21/2013 Kelly Taylor, MSW led this new event. Ms. Taylor is a Donor Recruitment Coordinator at DKMS, which is the world's largest bone marrow donor center. S4GIFT teamed up with the New York Organ Donor Network (NYODN) and DKMS to provide this 3-part course; this event was the first of three where attendees will earn a Certification of Completion Course in Organ and Bone Marrow Donation Counseling. Ms. Taylor clarified misconceptions most people have of bone marrow donation and explained that there are different ways to donate. She also went over the importance of recruiting more people for bone marrow donation due to the low incidence in matching. The next two events are being planned and are scheduled to be held in Fall 2013. About 10 Rho Chi members attended this training session. RHO CHI POST INFORMATIONAL SESSION 03/18/2013 Undergraduate, graduate, pharmacy and non-pharmacy students gathered for this information session held in both the Fall and Spring semesters and led by the Rho Chi Post editors. The editors discussed the values, goals and purpose of the Rho Chi Post. Additionally, students were encouraged to submit articles and to join the editorial team. About 30 pharmacy students attended in 2012, and about 10 pharmacy students attended in 2013. DOCTOR OF PHARMACY MENTORING PROGRAM (Photos) 03/14/2013 Rho Chi collaborated with members of the Leadership Development in Pharmacy Practice class in this new initiative. In an effort to promote student mentoring within the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, third and fourth year students mentees were paired with sixth year students mentors. Younger pharmacy students filled out a survey regarding their interests to help assign each student to a suitable mentor. Possible interests included pharmacy careers such as community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and pharmaceutical industry; post-graduate training such as residences, fellowships, PhD, MD, and MBA programs; pharmacy organizations such as American Pharmacists Association, Pharmacy Leadership Society, Rho Chi Post Monthly Newsletter, and Drug Information Association. This luncheon event served as the initial meeting to facilitate subsequent meetings between the mentee and mentor. Follow-up surveys were filled by all participants to determine the success of this program. About 50 pharmacy students attended, including Rho Chi members and nonmembers MY VASCULAR VALENTINE (Photos) 02/20/2013 This collaborative event with multiple science organizations of the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions aimed to educate local elementary school students from the St. Nicholas of Tolentine School about the heart and how to keep it healthy. There were stations that the students rotated to every 15-20 minutes, where they were able to participate in different activities. These activities included heart puzzles, checking blood pressure, learning about healthy foods, exercising and making Valentine's Day cards. Many volunteers were at this event throughout the day from Toxicology Club, Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS), Biology Students Association (BSA), Watson Pre-Health Society, educating about 33 students in the 6th grade. ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES FAIR 01/28/2013 The organizational activities fair is a traditional event organized both in the Fall and Spring semesters by the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. It serves as an opportunity to advertise to potential student members. This was a great opportunity for Rho Chi members to interact with younger students and inform them about Rho Chi's mission and pharmacy involvement. We also spoke about our past events and provided flyers with information about joining and/or submitting articles to the Rho Chi Post newsletter. Attendance was open to the whole university community. 2012 Events PHARMACY FEUD 10/25/2012 This new event was held to engage students in a new and unconventional, yet educational way. Pharmacy Feud, a play on the popular TV game show Family Feud, tested students on topics ranging from anatomy and physiology to biochemistry to therapeutics. Questions were created based on information found in reputable sources such as Koda-Kimble's Applied Therapeutics and DiPiro's Pharmacotherapy. Prizes were sponsored by the Dean's Office. About 15 pharmacy students participated in this event. PHARMACY ORGANIZATION DAY 10/22/2012 Hundreds of students were in attendance for the annual Pharmacy Organization Day held by the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Each organization had its respective information and posters. Rho Chi members spoke with students about the organization's mission, as well as the qualifications to receive an invitation to our organization in their fourth year. We also distributed pamphlets about Rho Chi, played a video summarizing our values and goals, and invited them to our upcoming event, Pharmacy Feud. Attendance was open to the all pharmacy students. RHO CHI POST INFORMATIONAL SESSION 10/04/2012 Undergraduate, graduate, pharmacy and non-pharmacy students gathered for this information session held in both the Fall and Spring semesters and led by the Rho Chi Post editors. The editors discussed the values, goals and purpose of the Rho Chi Post. Additionally, students were encouraged to submit articles and to join the editorial team. About 30 pharmacy students attended in 2012, and about 10 pharmacy students attended in 2013. CHANGING FACES OF PHARMACY 06/27/2012 This new initiative was led by Dr. John Conry and Dr. Manouchkathe Cassagnol. After many years of planning, the Changing Faces of Pharmacy program had its first session with approximately 20 local high school students in attendance. These students from the Queens Gateway to Health Sciences High School and Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School all expressed an interest in the field of pharmacy to their guidance counselors. With the help of ten Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma members serving as mentors, numerous faculty members and administrators from St. John's University led workshops for both the high school students and their parents to inform them about the profession of pharmacy and the role of pharmacists in the health care field. This two day event did not end after the second session. There are plans to bring the students back to campus during the semester to experience a day in the life of a pharmacy student and to keep in contact in the event the high school student would like more information about both the profession and the school's pharmacy program. About 10 Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma members participated, and approximately 20 local high school students attended the event. CURRICULUM VITAE (CV) WORKSHOP 04/19/2012 Priti Patel, PharmD, BCPS led this new event. She went over the information usually required on pharmacy students' curriculum vitae (CV). She also discussed the importance of studying one's own CV prior to an interview, as interviewers may ask about any item on the document. Students had the opportunity to have their current CV reviewed by Dr. Patel. About 18 Rho Chi members were present at this workshop. RELAY FOR LIFE 04/13/2012 This traditional, university-wide event occurs each Spring semester to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society. The Beta Delta chapter believes that involvement in such initiatives is of prime importance to its members, future pharmacists, and human beings in general. The event focused on a nightlong walk, serving as a tribute to all those who have fought and are currently fighting the battle against cancer. Relay for Life allowed members to learn about each other, as well as other organizations and students fighting for the same cause. This year, Rho Chi collaborated with APhA-ASP and Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) to form one, united team representing the pharmacy organizations (aside from fraternities and sororities). At our team site, we displayed banners representing all three of our organizations. Overall, the event was a huge success, as it created the much-needed cancer awareness and allowed attendees to raise substantial funds. More than 1,300 students from the University attended the event. They raised over $80,000 for the American Cancer Society. About 17 Students from the Rho Chi society were present. BECOMING A STRONG PGY-1 RESIDENCY CANDIDATE 04/12/2012 Mohammad A. Rattu led this new initiative. He is a sixth-year pharmacy student and accepted 2012-2013 PGY-1 Resident at the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System (VA NYHHS) in Brooklyn, NY. The event was open to Rho Chi members and nonmembers across all years of pharmacy study. The presentation focused on preparing for the PGY-1 residency application process, and informed interested students on what to expect, using examples from Mr. Rattu's own experiences as an applicant. Mr. Rattu first spoke about clarifying common residency application myths, allowing students to differentiate the facts from the common misconceptions about residency programs. In addition, he presented recent ASHP-accredited residency matching statistics, making students aware of past, current, and projected trends. He also advised students on creating comprehensive, professional curriculum vitae (CV) and stressed the importance of maintaining an updated CV. The presentation had two sessions. The first portion of the presentation was more general to help all pharmacy students, irrespective of their current year. The second part explained practical steps to plan and prepare for attending the ASHP Midyear 2012, with a greater focus for current 5th year students. The end of the presentation was also open to questions from all students. Overall, this event was very successful and resulted in positive feedback from students who participated. Over 42 pharmacy students attended, including Rho Chi members and nonmembers. PHARMACY CAREER DAY 03/29/2012 Pharmacy Career Day is a traditional event hosted by the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. It is considered a 'must go' for all pharmacy students, as it serves as an excellent opportunity to meet with various pharmacy employers. There were representatives from the pharmaceutical industry to nuclear pharmacies. The Beta Delta chapter hosted a table at the event to promote the organization. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet with enthusiastic younger classmen, as well as to introduce them to the Rho Chi honor society and the values we stand for. We provided pamphlets and information to all interested students. The event was a huge stride forward in creating the awareness about the society. Attendance was open to all pharmacy students, faculty, and employers. COFFEEHOUSE CHATS (Photos) 03/29/2012 The 'Coffeehouse Chats' is a unique event the Beta Delta chapter hosted for the third year running. The goal of this event has been to foster professional relationships between students, faculty members, and administrators. We aimed to provide an outlet where they could come together to discuss experiences, careers, current events, and other topics pertaining to the field of pharmacy. Attendees discussed why they chose to go into the field of pharmacy and provided advice to one another about school, rotations, and careers. We also discussed current events affecting future pharmacy practice. We served dinner, dessert, and coffee, as well as provided a casual environment for attendees to mingle and talk. After the event, students, faculty members, and administrators provided very positive feedback. About 45 pharmacy students and nine (9) faculty members and administrators attended this event. COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE 03/15/2012 Similar to the community blood drive in the previous semester, during this collaborative event with APhA-ASP, members from both organizations recruited students on campus to donate blood. This event was open to the entire University community. MY VASCULAR VALENTINE 02/14/2012 This collaborative event with multiple science organizations of the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions aimed to educate local elementary school students from the St. Nicholas of Tolentine School. There were stations that the students rotated to every 15-20 minutes, where they were able to participate in different activities. These activities included Jeopardy, checking heart rates, and learning about healthy foods. Many volunteers were at this event throughout the day from Toxicology Club, Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS), Biology Students Association (BSA), Watson Pre-Health Society, educating about 33 students in the 6th grade. WALGREENS DIVERSITY INITIATIVE 02/13/2012 In this new initiative, coordinated by clinical faculty member and assistant dean, John Conry, PharmD, BCPS, AAHIVP, high school students with a particular interest in pharmacy visited for a tour of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. Rho Chi students fielded questions, moderated by Dr. Conry and Dr. Cassagnol. The event was a precursor to a summer program intended to target potential students interested in pharmacy. About 17 high school students attended the program with three (3) Rho Chi Members present as volunteers. ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES FAIR 01/30/2012 The organizational activities fair is a traditional event organized during the Spring semester by the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. It serves as an opportunity to advertise to potential student members. This was a great opportunity for the Executive Board and Rho Chi members to interact with younger students and educate them about Rho Chi. We spoke about our past events and provided pamphlets. Attendance was open to the whole university community. 2011 Events WHO WANTS TO BE A PHARMD? GAME (Photos) 11/21/2011 This recurring event was an attempt to get as many people involved in a fun and interactive game show, while still participating in a learning experience. We significantly advertised this event with many posters, social media (e.g. Facebook), and emails to both members and nonmembers. We were able to have prizes sponsored by the Dean of pharmacy. Students formed teams of three (3), and each had the opportunity to participate in this game show. The game resembled the popular television game show 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' but asked pharmacy-related questions based on information found in Koda-Kimble's Applied Therapeutics textbook. Each team had three (3) lifelines, just like in the game show, and as a result, students and faculty members in the audience actively participated. The top three (3) teams with the most correctly answered questions won gift cards. Due to the number of teams willing to participate and the limited time to hold this event, we extended this event to a second day. This event was a huge success and was a lot of fun for all of the people who attended. Over 80 students from various years participated in this game as well as two (2) faculty members. HEALTHY HALLOWEEN (Photos) 10/28/2011 This annual, collaborative event with Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) accommodated and taught younger elementary school children how to have a safe and healthy Halloween holiday. We recruited many volunteers from Rho Chi to set up a table for playing fun games with the elementary school children. We played 'Pass the Pumpkin' and 'Witches Stew,' both of which all of the kids enjoyed. We also provided 'goodie bags' as prizes for the winners of our games. About five (5) Rho Chi chapter members collaborated with several PLS members to educate nearly 100 elementary school students in this event. COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE 10/27/2011 Rho Chi collaborated with members of APhA-ASP and Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) to support a blood drive on campus. Rho Chi helped build awareness among pharmacy students about the blood drive, and recruited more donors as more students were informed. We received considerable praise from the blood drive's organizers for our combined efforts. Approximately 30 Rho Chi members participated and / or volunteered during this event. MOCK RESIDENCY INTERVIEWS (Photos) 10/26/2011 This new event prepared fifth and sixth year pharmacy students for residency and fellowship interviews. We emailed faculty members to see who would be interested in participating. Students worked with their assigned faculty members, who would serve as interviewers. Students brought updated curriculum vitae (CV) and dressed professionally. Each student had a specific time slot for an interview. Once the interview was over, each student received feedback from the designated interviewer. This event was a huge success - all attendees enjoyed it. Approximately 75 students and faculty members participated in this event. PHARMACY ORGANIZATION DAY (Photos) 10/10/2011 During this traditional event, pre-professional and professional students came to receive information on how they could become involved in pharmacy organizations on campus. Each organization had its respective information and posters. Rho Chi members spoke with students about the organization's mission, as well as the qualifications to receive an invitation to our organization in their fourth year. We also distributed pamphlets about Rho Chi, and promoted upcoming events, such as the Who wants to be a PharmD? game. Over 60 pharmacy students in their pre-professional and professional years attended. COFFEEHOUSE CHATS (Photos) 04/19/2011 The Coffeehouse Chats event is a unique event the Beta Delta Chapter hosted for the second year running. It focused on fostering professional relationships between students and faculty, serving as a mutual opportunity for sharing professors' and students' experiences. The event was staged to mimic a calm and relaxed setting around a fireplace; chairs were set up in a circle so that every member of the gathering would have an equal say and be visible. Rho Chi students and faculty (including the Dean of the College of Pharmacy) participated in the event. The faculty provided comprehensive descriptions of their career journeys, including their motivations. We discussed the future of pharmacy, and faculty provided advice to the students regarding residencies, rotations, and other pertinent topics. Dinner and dessert allowed everyone to engage on a more personal level. The event was very well received by all who attended. Students gained invaluable experiences, while the faculty equally appreciated the chance to meet with the students to learn more about them. The Beta Delta Chapter was praised by the Dean and faculty for its efforts in hosting the unique event. It was an absolute honor for us to host this event and receive the positive feedback from faculty and students. A total of 52 students and faculty were in attendance. PHARMACY CAREER DAY 04/11/2011 Pharmacy Career Day is a traditional event that is hosted by the St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. The event is a must for all pharmacy students, serving as an excellent opportunity to meet with various pharmacy employers (ranging from the pharmaceutical industry to nuclear pharmacies). It also is a great chance to experience the immense diversity in the profession. The Beta Delta Chapter hosted a table at the event to promote the organization. We met with enthusiastic underclassmen, introducing them to general information about the Society and the values we stand for. The event furthered awareness of Rho Chi and other pharmacy organizations. Attendance was open to all pharmacy students, faculty, and employers. RELAY FOR LIFE 04/08/2011 The Relay for Life event is a traditional event hosted by St. John's University every Spring to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer society. The Beta Delta Chapter believes that being a part of Rho Chi means providing service to the community. Involvement in such initiatives is of prime importance to members, as future pharmacists and human beings. The event focused on a night-long walk, serving as a tribute to all those who have fought and are currently fighting the battle against cancer. Relay for Life allowed members to learn about each other, as well as other organizations and students fighting for the same cause. Overall, the event was a huge success, as it created much-needed awareness and raised substantial funds. Attendance of more than 1,300 students from the University was recorded. THE WAY FORWARD 03/31/2011 The Way Forward was a new initiative created by the Beta Delta Chapter in order to educate members on the future of the pharmacy profession. The guest speakers were Dr. Vibhuti Arya, Ms. Carina Fung, and Ms. Sharon Dindial. The event was an interactive discussion that began with a presentation on the future of pharmacy and the evolving role of the pharmacist. The event supported the theme of the Beta Delta Chapter: it encouraged thinking outside of the box. The event gave members an opportunity to envision what the future might hold for them. Having Dr. Arya as the lead presenter was excellent; she currently serves as a public health advocate, a role not frequently associated with pharmacists. The level of member interest was extraordinary, leading to the event lasting much longer than expected. A total of 40 students and faculty attended this event. ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES FAIR 02/02/2011 The organizational activities fair is a traditional event organized every Spring by St. John's University to serve as an opportunity for organizations to showcase themselves to the university community. This was a great opportunity for the E-Board and Rho Chi members to interact with younger students and educate them about Rho Chi. We showcased our past events and gave out pamphlets to educate those not familiar with Rho Chi. Attendance was open to the entire university community. 2010 Events PHARMACY NETWORKING EVENT 11/17/2010 This new event was a collaboration between Rho Chi and PLS. Potential employers rotated about the tables every 10 minutes to speak with students about their career paths. It involved pharmacy students of all grade levels (pre-professional and professional) and employers from various backgrounds. There were 13 Rho Chi members in attendance. HEALTHY HALLOWEEN 10/29/2010 This was a traditional event held by Rho Chi, PLS, and APhA-ASP. Sponsored by Walgreens Pharmacy, the event's main objective was to teach elementary school children from St. John the Baptist school the importance of healthy choices during Halloween. Each year, about 70 children have this opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyles while engaging in traditional Halloween fun. The event began with a performance on how to keep teeth clean and healthy. Rho Chi was responsible for the mask-creating table, where children decorated masks with paint and glitter. About 30 Rho Chi members attended this event. 'WHO WANTS TO BE A PHARM.D?' (Photos) 10/20/2010 Rho Chi, in collaboration with APhA-ASP and Phi Lambda Sigma, held its first annual 'Who wants to be a Pharm.D?' game based on the popular TV show, 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' Students participated in teams of three to answer 14 progressively-difficult Over-The-Counter (OTC) medication questions usually encountered in a community pharmacy setting. The questions were created in collaboration with the Director of Patient Simulation LABs. Faculty volunteered as lifelines to assist students in answering the questions. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining and informative experience. A total of 28 Rho Chi members, as well as several APhA-ASP and PLS members, attended. BREAST CANCER WALK 10/17/2010 Each year, Rho Chi participates in the Breast Cancer Walk. 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer' is the American Cancer Society's premier event to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. The walk aids the progress in defeating this disease. Check-in was at 8:00 AM, and we were ready to walk by 9:30 AM. Members all came together and walked 3 miles, discussing an array of topics along the way. Attendance was in the hundreds, if not thousands, of people from all backgrounds that came together for a common cause. PHARMACY MONTH KICKOFF 10/01/2010 During this traditional event, Rho Chi, along with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA-ASP), Phi Lambda Sigma (Pharmacy Leadership Society, PLS), and Lambda Kappa Sigma (LKS), sponsored a luncheon to begin National Pharmacy Month (October). Students had the opportunity to socialize and interact with students from all grade levels. Faculty members also attended, providing insight and tips on how to make the month a big success. In addition, food was served and pamphlets were provided. Over 15 Rho Chi members attended. PHARMACY ORGANIZATION DAY 09/15/2010 During this traditional event, each pharmacy organization on campus was granted one table to display its awards, posters, pictures, and other pertinent information. Students from all grade levels had the opportunity to learn how to get involved at St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. We distributed pamphlets about Rho Chi and promoted our upcoming events. Attendance was open to the college of pharmacy students. LEADERSHIP ROUNDTABLE 04/22/2010 Rho Chi collaborated with the four other pharmacy organizations (APhA, PLS, LKS, and PDC) in an event to address topics that participants, who were chiefly student leaders, are most fascinated with. The main issues discussed were residencies and fellowships, in addition to national meetings that foster vast networking. Sixth year pharmacy students lead the discussions, answering questions about what steps they took to achieve their respective residences. They emphasized a continuous balance of involvement in academia and leadership roles, inspiring fellow students to reproduce (and perhaps exceed) their achievements. A total of 6 Rho Chi members attended this event. MS WALK: SOUTH STREET SEAPORT 04/18/2010 Each year, Rho Chi participates in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Walk at South Street Seaport to help raise critical funds that support cutting-edge research, drive change through advocacy, facilitate professional education, and provide programs and services to help people with MS move their lives forward. Check-in was at 8:00 AM, and we were ready to walk by 9:30 AM. Members all came together and walked 3 miles, discussing an array of topics along the way. It was a perfect day, and the walk's path was beautiful. There was a festival type of atmosphere, including food and entertainment. This was a great opportunity to see a community come together for a shared goal. Every mile one walks means more monetary support to aid those facing the daily challenges of living with MS. The walk serves as an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how Rho Chi puts its university's and its own Vincentian ideals of caring and concern for others into action. A total of 5 Rho Chi members attended this event. CAREER DAY 04/15/2010 As an immense crowd-gatherer and traditional event, Career Day was packed with pharmacy students (of all grade levels: pre-professional and professional) and employers from various backgrounds (including the pharmaceutical industry, the Food and Drug Administration, inpatient facilities, community pharmacies, and research groups, to name a few). Rho Chi collaborated with APhA and PLS, hosting an event that promoted myriad opportunities in pharmacy. Enthusiasm flowed through the veins of aspiring students: they scrambled their ways to the various organizations' and employers' tables they were most interested in, with hopes of obtaining information that would strengthen their respective concentrations (such as hospital, community, research, regulatory affairs, and many more) in the future. Rho Chi promoted its ideals and provided information to interested students. About 16 Rho Chi members were in attendance. DRESS FOR SUCCESS 04/13/2010 As an ongoing tradition, the second annual Dress for Success collaboration event with all five-pharmacy organizations (including PLS, APhA, LKS, and PDC) established a unique relationship between the students and faculty. Student models wore attire proper for specific occasions, such as interviews and casual business engagements. Conversely, professors dressed in attire that would be inappropriate for the same circumstances. Participants questioned the faculty regarding suitable dress codes for job interviews, rotations, and formal gatherings. A total of 26 students and 8 professors attended the event. RELAY FOR LIFE 04/09/2010 As a tradition, Rho Chi members met in Carnesecca Arena to help the American Cancer Society raise funds and increase hope in the fight against cancer. Members walked the designated track from 6:00PM to 2:00AM in order to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers, pay tribute to those who have lost their lives to cancer, and raise money for the cause. To represent our organization and the profession of pharmacy, Rho Chi members came together before the event to create a banner that we carried, as we lapped around the track. As this is a yearly St. John's University tradition, we also had the opportunity to socialize with many of the participants from the university and outlying community. Following the welcome, an opening ceremony and 'survivor lap' took place in a moving gesture of remembrance, as hundreds of luminaria candles were lit in tribute to those loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer and continue to battle this dreaded disease. Rho Chi members participated in the walk-a-thon around the court, as well as a variety of games and activities. About 19 pharmacy students attended, along with hundreds of other students. TELL TWO, PART TWO 04/06/2010 This was a successful collaboration between PLS and Rho Chi. In this traditional event, the pharmacy organizations gathered a few of the university's therapeutics professors to present their specialty for the students. The topics included vaccinations, important symptoms, and drugs of abuse. There was a great turnout of spectators for this occasion, as it was a great way to meet the professors, learn something new, and participate in a relaxing activity. The idea of the event was to tell two other students about their experience, and then they would then go and tell another two students and so on. We, as Rho Chi members, feel proud that we have promoted education to our fellow pharmacy students. A total of 7 members from Rho Chi attended along with many other pharmacy students. POISON CONTROL PETITION 03/29/2010 The Long Island Regional Poison and Drug Information Center is a resource center for the general public, physicians, and hospital emergency rooms. In addition to managing poison emergencies, they offer drug and herbal product information. In the event that someone does ingest a chemical or poison, his or her first call is usually the Poison Center. However, recently, action has been taken to shut down the Poison Centers, which will be detrimental to healthcare. In an effort to prevent this from happening, we informed the public of how their local professional training and public education programs are vital to the health and safety of our community. We encouraged students to send a letter to the governor and sign a petition to prevent this from occurring. Rho Chi members dispersed throughout campus to inform the public of the situation and encouraged students to join the cause. Our response for the petition was great: we hope to see that our efforts make a difference. COFFEEHOUSE CHATS 03/25/2010 Rho Chi hosted what we hope to be the first of many events in the series titled, The Coffeehouse Chats, inspired by our desire to enable fellow inductees with academic visibility through the lives of our Rho Chi faculty. This event was exclusive for all inducted Rho Chi faculty, who came together to inspire students through their experiences and growth in Rho Chi. The faculty recounted their unique journeys and career paths in academia, as well. In seeking a uniquely-comfortable setting for a warm discussion, the event was held in the second floor Starbucks Coffeehouse of the newly constructed, D'Angelo Center, which debuted in fall of 2009. Appetizers, dinner, dessert, and coffee were served to all attendees. Lounge chairs were setup in a circular fashion to encourage and foster a sense of unity and student-professor bonding. In addition, students and professors were seated next to each other. What initially was scheduled as an event to run from 6 to 8 PM, it ended up lasting much later into the evening because students were so curious and enamored by the fascinating lives of our professors and most importantly, those were willing to be open and honestly share their experiences growing up and developing into their roles as pharmacists and educators alike. Students gained insight into the evolving world of pharmacy across the decades through the eyes of our professors, and learned of the myriad of possibilities and career options in pharmacy. In turn, students shared their hopes, dreams, and aspirations: they provided a student perspective as to the improvements that they would like to see in the college, as professors keenly took notes. It was the sense of bonding, listening, and being heard as students, that we felt we should perpetuate as Rho Chi, especially for those who seek a future as professors in the institution of pharmacy academia. In recognizing that a lifetime of learning is essential to further the future of the profession, Rho Chi seeks to inspire its students to further embrace the knowledge we have been given and actively work to participate in furthering the science of the profession through potential research opportunities with Rho Chi professors. After all, they are experts in their field, and can provide a mentorship role for students who seek one. The Coffeehouse Chats success provided the groundwork to jumpstart what we hope to be a recurrent Rho Chi motif: to establish new bonds, and grow as students, slowly paving our road into the pharmacy profession. A total of 17 professors and 20 students attended. ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES FAIR 02/02/2010 Every semester, there is a traditional Activities Fair, where each organization on campus is granted one table to display its awards, posters, pictures, and other pertinent information. Rho Chi was fortunate to have a table to present our Beta Delta Chapter banner, as well a poster board full of pictures of our past events and Rho Chi's mission statement. We also handed out pamphlets with information about Rho Chi. PHARMACY SOCIAL 01/28/2010 During this new event, we collaborated with the four other pharmacy organizations on campus, where pharmacy students in every level (from first to sixth year) met in the CVS Lounge. The lounge was packed, and everyone was mingling and enjoying a slice of pizza for the first half hour. Representatives from each organization introduced themselves; they spoke a little about their organization, as well as their upcoming events for the spring semester. This was a great opportunity to inform the younger students about what Rho Chi is, and to encourage them to strive to their academic goals. Over 17 members attended. 2009 Events RHO CHI CARDIO SESSION 11/12/2009 Continuing with our tradition of 'Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes,' we again had the opportunity to host an intense cardio session for members. Trinity, a personal trainer, returned once again with new workouts and more tips on how to stay healthy and properly manage our diets. Overall, we got the work out of a lifetime, going home hungry for a healthy snack! A total of 14 Rho Chi members were in attendance. HEALTHY HALLOWEEN 10/29/2009 Following another annual tradition, Rho Chi held this event in conjunction with PLS and APhA-ASP. During the event, which was sponsored by Walgreens pharmacy, Rho Chi members had the opportunity to teach elementary school children from John the Baptist, an elementary school, the importance of healthy choices during Halloween. We provided healthy milk shakes for children, taught them the importance of calcium, and showed them how to make their very own shakes! We truly made an impact on these children, showing them that a glass of milk can be much tastier than soda! About 8 Rho Chi members attended this event. ORGANIZATION DAY 10/15/2009 For this traditional event, we decided to treat pharmacy students to a Pharmacy Organization Day before the start of another stressful semester. We collaborated with 3 other pharmacy organizations APhA, LKS, and PLS to speak to younger students about how they can get more involved on campus. This was an opportunity for younger students to mingle with upperclassmen and learn about what the future has to bring. Each organization introduced their executive board, and made a short speech regarding the requirements to be in the organization and their goals for the semester. The attendance was outstanding! WALGREENS IMMUNIZATION DAY 10/06/2009 During this new event, Rho Chi had the opportunity to receive a sponsorship from Walgreens pharmacy, which provided the seasonal flu vaccinations to students at St. John's University. At the event, we helped with the necessary preparations for administering the immunizations, and provided counseling to the patients after they received the injection. We provided pamphlets and additional information to each person. During the event, 98 students were vaccinated, and 12 Rho Chi members were in attendance to assist the occasion. AMERICAN PHARMACY MONTH KICKOFF 10/01/2009 During this new event, Rho Chi, along with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), Phi Lambda Sigma (Pharmacy Leadership Society, PLS), and Lambda Kappa Sigma (LKS), sponsored a luncheon to begin the National Pharmacy Month, October. Students had the opportunity to socialize and interact with students from all grade levels. Faculty members also attended, providing their insight and tips on how to make the month a big success. In addition, food was served and pamphlets were provided. Over 20 Rho Chi members attended. |
